Definition

The Principles for Sustainable Insurance are a global framework launched by the UNEP Finance Initiative in 2012 at the Rio+20 conference, comprising four principles committing insurers to embed ESG issues in decision-making, work with clients and partners to raise ESG performance, engage governments and regulators, and demonstrate accountability through public disclosure. The PSI initiative also develops implementation guidance on topics from climate risk to nature and social insurance.

Overview

How it is used

Insurers and reinsurers representing a substantial share of world premiums are signatories; PSI working groups produce guidance used in underwriting policy, ESG integration and regulatory engagement.

Why it matters

Insurance determines what risks society can take and at what price; the PSI is the main global vehicle aligning that gatekeeping function with sustainability goals.
