In brief
The Farm Sustainability Assessment, from SAI Platform (a food-and-drink industry collaboration), is a questionnaire-based tool for assessing and benchmarking farm-level sustainability. Farmers complete a self-assessment across environmental, social and economic topics and receive a performance level — Bronze, Silver, Gold — which buyers use to set sustainable-sourcing targets; optional third-party verification supports claims-linked use. A defining feature is benchmarking: FSA levels are formally benchmarked against dozens of other farm schemes, so a buyer can accept an equivalent scheme in place of the FSA. FSA 3.0 is the current edition. The claim discipline follows: the FSA produces a comparable performance level from self-assessed, optionally verified data — it is not an audit-backed certification, and claims should state the level and verification status. Use is concentrated among food and beverage majors setting percentage-FSA sourcing targets in annual reports. Because the benchmark tables are published, a claim that a scheme is 'FSA-equivalent' can be checked directly against the current benchmarking list. A rating or validation does not by itself certify every product or substantiate claims beyond the assessed scope.
