The Global Sustainable Tourism Council maintains the GSTC Criteria — the global baseline standards for sustainable tourism — in its Hotel Standard and Tour Operator Standard, both at v4.0 (December 2025). GSTC's primary mechanism is recognition: it accredits certification bodies and recognises other standards as equivalent to the GSTC Criteria, so most travellers encounter it indirectly through recognised labels rather than a GSTC logo. Public criteria and the recognition mechanism make it the reference against which the credibility of the crowded tourism-ecolabel landscape is judged. The Criteria cover four pillars: sustainable management, socio-economic impacts, cultural impacts and environmental impacts. For claims, GSTC recognition tells you that a label's standard meets the global baseline; the certificate itself still comes from the recognised scheme, so a tourism-business claim should name the certifying body, not merely invoke GSTC. Alignment with these principles is a stated position, not a certification; it does not by itself demonstrate compliance or outcomes.
