GFANZ — the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero — is the umbrella for financial-sector net-zero alliances (NZBA for banks, NZAM for asset managers, NZIA for insurers, NZAOA for asset owners and others), formed at COP26 to coordinate financed-emissions commitments. Following its 2025 restructure, GFANZ repositioned from membership tracking toward a guidance publisher: the alliance framework and its guidance suite remain the reference for how financial institutions set portfolio targets, while member commitments are tracked by the individual alliances. Membership is a stated commitment with published expectations, not an audited condition; alliance exits (notably among US banks in 2024–25) demonstrated that commitments are voluntary and revocable. Each alliance keeps its own commitment text and target-setting protocols, so a bank's NZBA membership and an insurer's NZIA membership rest on different rulebooks. GFANZ's published progress reports aggregate alliance-reported data rather than independently verified figures. Alignment with these principles is a stated position, not a certification; it does not by itself demonstrate compliance or outcomes.
