Traditional Knowledge (TK)
Definition
Traditional knowledge is the knowledge, innovations and practices of Indigenous peoples and local communities embodying traditional lifestyles relevant to the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity — the Convention on Biological Diversity's framing (Article 8(j)), which requires respecting, preserving and maintaining such knowledge and promoting its wider application with the approval and involvement of knowledge holders, and equitable sharing of benefits arising from its use. WIPO's 2024 treaty on intellectual property, genetic resources and associated traditional knowledge added disclosure obligations in patent applications.
