Resource Nationalism

Meaning statusEstablishedSource recordDirect document linkedWhy these are different

Definition

Resource nationalism is the assertion by states of greater control over natural resources within their territory, through instruments such as nationalisation, higher royalties and taxes, export restrictions or bans, local processing requirements and renegotiation of contracts. It typically rises with commodity prices and with political pressure to capture more value from the country's own resources.

Overview

How it is used

The term structures analysis of mining policy, critical minerals strategy, investment risk assessment and resource diplomacy.

Why it matters

Resource nationalism will partly determine how the critical minerals of the transition are shared and priced — and whether producing countries capture development value or merely supply raw rock.
