Power-to-X (P2X)
Definition
Power-to-X denotes technologies that convert electrical energy into other energy carriers or products. Principal pathways include power-to-gas (electrolytic hydrogen, or synthetic methane via methanation), power-to-liquid (synthetic hydrocarbon fuels from hydrogen and captured CO₂), power-to-chemicals (ammonia, methanol) and power-to-heat. The concept enables storage of variable renewables and decarbonisation of sectors that cannot be directly electrified.

Overview
How it is used
The term structures national hydrogen strategies, EU policy (renewable fuels of non-biological origin, RFNBO quotas) and project pipelines for e-fuels and green ammonia.
Why it matters
P2X determines whether renewable power can reach the last 20–30% of the energy system; its cost trajectory and deployment discipline shape net zero feasibility for aviation, shipping and industry.
