Environmental footprinting
Environmental footprint
Definition
Environmental footprint denotes, generically, any measure of the environmental demands or impacts of an activity — including carbon, water, material and ecological footprints. Specifically, the European Commission's Environmental Footprint methods (Product Environmental Footprint, PEF, and Organisation Environmental Footprint, OEF) are standardised life-cycle assessment methods for quantifying and communicating multi-criteria environmental performance.

Overview
What it means
PEF is a multi-criteria measure of the environmental performance of a good or service across its whole life cycle, covering 16 impact categories (climate change, water, resource use, toxicity and more), built on ISO 14040/44 with added modelling, data-quality and category-rule requirements (PEFCRs) to ensure comparability and combat greenwashing.
How it is used
Used in EU product policy pilots and category rules (e. g. apparel and footwear PEFCR finalised 2025), corporate footprinting and substantiation of environmental claims.
Why it matters
It is the leading attempt to make life-cycle environmental information comparable and regulation-ready across a single market.
