Belonging
Definition
In diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) practice, belonging is the emotional connection and sense of acceptance individuals experience within a group or organisation: feeling valued, respected and understood for one's identity and contributions. Where inclusion refers to the actions an employer takes, belonging describes how those actions make people feel — it is the outcome by which inclusion efforts are judged.

Overview
What it means
Belonging entered workplace frameworks as "DEIB" because representation and fair policy (diversity and equity) do not by themselves produce engagement: employees who feel they don't belong disengage or leave regardless of formal inclusion.
It is closely tied to psychological safety — the belief that one can speak up without punishment — and is recognised as a basic human need with direct links to retention, wellbeing and team performance.
How it is used
Organisations measure belonging through engagement and inclusion surveys, and build it through inclusive leadership, recognition practices and employee resource groups. In social sustainability reporting it appears as a qualitative dimension of workforce experience alongside diversity metrics.
Why it matters
Belonging converts diversity from headcount into functioning inclusion; without it, DEI programmes produce representation without retention. It gives social sustainability a measurable human-experience dimension beyond compliance.
