RE100, led by Climate Group in partnership with CDP, is the corporate commitment to 100% renewable electricity, with over 400 member companies. Its Technical Criteria — consolidated in the April 2025 release — define what counts: eligible renewable sources, market-boundary rules for purchasing instruments, and thresholds for self-generation and procurement claims. Members report annually through CDP, and progress data is published. RE100's significance is definitional discipline in a claim category rife with loose wording: "100% renewable" only means something against rules like these, and regulators and the SEC have probed claims that rest on unbundled certificates without credible delivery matching. Membership and reporting are commitments against the criteria; RE100 does not certify purchases. Membership criteria include a public commitment and annual reporting, and Climate Group publishes aggregate progress — including the growing gap between members' demand and market supply of credible renewables. The technical criteria's treatment of market boundaries and certificate vintages is the part claim-checkers scrutinise hardest. Alignment with these principles is a stated position, not a certification; it does not by itself demonstrate compliance or outcomes.
