In brief
ISO 14083:2023 is the first international standard for quantifying and reporting greenhouse-gas emissions from transport-chain operations — freight and passenger transport across all modes, including the allocation of emissions to individual shipments and passengers. It succeeds Europe's EN 16258 and aligns with the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) Framework, giving logistics emissions accounting a single international rulebook. Its practical role is in Scope 3 accounting and in claims about "low-carbon delivery" or shipment-level footprints: it defines how transport emissions are calculated consistently so that figures from different carriers can be aggregated and compared. As with other ISO accounting standards, it structures quantification only. The standard covers passenger and freight transport across road, rail, air, sea and inland waterways, including transhipment hubs. It is the accounting basis expected to underpin EU rules on counting transport emissions and the shipment-level footprints now demanded in corporate Scope 3 reporting. Using this framework does not by itself verify data accuracy, legal compliance or sustainability performance.
