ISO 14067:2018 defines the requirements for quantifying and reporting the carbon footprint of a product (CFP) — the sum of greenhouse-gas emissions and removals across its life cycle, built on the ISO 14040/44 LCA framework. It specifies system boundaries, allocation rules, treatment of biogenic carbon and of electricity, and the content of a CFP study report. It is the reference method behind product-carbon-footprint claims and behind downstream schemes that require CFP data. Its claims discipline is methodological: a footprint figure is meaningful only with its declared scope — cradle-to-gate and cradle-to-grave numbers are not interchangeable, and partial footprints must be disclosed as such. The standard distinguishes full life-cycle footprints from partial (for example cradle-to-gate) footprints and requires the boundary to be declared with the figure. It also specifies how biogenic carbon, land-use change and electricity mix are handled — the technical choices most often manipulated in favourable product-footprint claims. Using this framework does not by itself verify data accuracy, legal compliance or sustainability performance.

A relationship does not mean that the standard proves or validates every use of a claim.
