What this profile covers
ISEAL is the membership body for credible sustainability systems. Its Code of Good Practice defines how a standards system should be governed: transparent standard-setting, assurance, monitoring and evaluation, and claims discipline. Membership and Code Compliance are widely treated as the meta-credential for certification schemes — buyers, regulators and researchers use ISEAL status as a first filter on scheme credibility. ISEAL assesses the system, not the certified entities: ISEAL Code Compliance tells you a scheme's governance and assurance arrangements meet the Code; it says nothing about whether any given certificate holder performs. ISEAL distinguishes membership tiers, with Code Compliant status requiring independent evaluation against the full Code. The Alliance's Credibility Principles define the underlying qualities — transparency, truthfulness, stakeholder engagement, improvement — that the Code operationalises, and they are frequently cited in regulatory guidance on what makes an environmental label trustworthy. Alignment with these principles is a stated position, not a certification; it does not by itself demonstrate compliance or outcomes.
