In brief
The EU organic logo is a legally protected certification under Regulation (EU) 2018/848 on organic production, in force since 2022. It covers all food and agricultural products sold as organic in the EU: at least 95% of agricultural ingredients must be organic for processed food to carry the logo, and the rules govern farming practice (pesticide and fertiliser restrictions, animal welfare, GMO prohibition) through to processing and labelling. Control is exercised by national control bodies and authorities; imported organic goods require equivalent certification, and each operator's certificate can be checked through national systems. Because "organic" is a protected term in EU law, misuse is a legal violation rather than a mere misleading-claim risk, and the logo must be accompanied by the code number of the control body and the place of farming of the agricultural raw materials. Certification supports an organic claim only for the certified product within the regulation's scope; it does not by itself substantiate broader environmental or health wording beyond that scope.
