CertifHy operates the EU-recognised voluntary certification scheme for renewable and low-carbon hydrogen and hydrogen-derived fuels. Its function is regulatory proof: it enables producers to demonstrate compliance with the EU's Renewable Energy Directive rules for Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs) and recycled carbon fuels, including the greenhouse-gas methodology and additionality, temporal and geographic correlation conditions. The scheme issues certificates that move on an account-transfer and cancellation basis — a book-and-claim chain of custody in which the sustainability attribute is decoupled from physical product, so a buyer's claim rests on cancelled certificates, not physical molecules. This model was confirmed against the CertifHy Scheme Document (§6.4/§7.3); earlier descriptions of CertifHy as mass-balance are incorrect. Its registry is not public. CertifHy is among the voluntary schemes seeking European Commission recognition under the RED framework, alongside schemes such as ISCC EU, and recognition determines whether its certificates can substantiate compliance claims in EU member states. For corporate buyers, the practical use is proving that purchased hydrogen counts toward renewable-energy or emissions targets. Certification supports a claim only within the certified scope and the scheme's certificate-cancellation rules; it does not by itself prove outcomes or validate wording beyond that scope.
