What this profile covers
Bonsucro is the sustainability certification scheme for sugarcane and its derived products — sugar, ethanol, molasses — covering mills and the farms supplying them. Its Production Standard sets measurable thresholds across environmental and social indicators (a core metric-based design rather than purely procedural requirements), including GHG emissions, water use, biodiversity, human rights and labour conditions; a separate Chain of Custody Standard governs certified volumes, with mass-balance as the dominant model and a credit-trading platform for volume claims. Bonsucro is ISEAL Code Compliant and publishes impact data, which distinguishes it among commodity schemes. Membership spans producers, traders and major buyers in food, beverage and biofuel markets. As with all mass-balance systems, "Bonsucro certified" on a supply-chain claim refers to matched volumes, not necessarily physical content in a given batch. Certification supports a claim only within the certified scope and chain-of-custody model; it does not by itself prove outcomes or validate wording beyond that scope.
