Aluminium Stewardship Initiative
In brief
The Aluminium Stewardship Initiative operates dual certification for the aluminium value chain, from bauxite mining through smelting to end use. Its Performance Standard (V3.1) sets 11 principles covering greenhouse-gas emissions, biodiversity, water, waste, human rights (including Indigenous Peoples' rights) and circularity; its Chain of Custody Standard (V2.1) governs the flow of ASI-certified material, enabling downstream users to source certified aluminium. An Assurance Manual defines how audits run, and ASI publishes audit reports — including findings of non-conformance — an unusual degree of transparency for an industry scheme. Membership spans miners, smelters, semi-fabricators, brands such as Apple and Nespresso, and civil-society organisations, which gives its multi-stakeholder governance more weight than a purely industry-run programme. ASI certification is site- and scope-specific: a company may certify one smelter or product line while others remain uncertified, and claims must stay within the certified scope and chain-of-custody model. Certification does not by itself prove outcomes or validate wording beyond that scope.
