EmpCo claim requirements
Labels and certification claims
Identify the exact mark, scheme owner, award basis, certified subject, validity period and permitted wording before relying on a label or badge.
Illustrative wording
A claim that could start this review
“Certified sustainable packaging.”
This example is written by EmpCo for orientation. It is not a quotation, company evidence or a finding that the rule applies.
Clarify
What must be established
- Is a label or badge actually displayed?
- Who owns the scheme and what published criteria apply?
- What exact subject, market and period does the certificate cover?
Evidence
What to obtain
- The exact label or mark as displayed and the subject it covers.
- The scheme owner, governance, published criteria and award decision.
- Evidence of certification validity, independence and the permitted wording or logo use.
Communication
What should be clear
- Name the scheme and certified subject.
- Limit wording and logo use to the certificate scope and validity period.
Unresolved until reviewed
What EmpCo does not assume
- Whether a voluntary sustainability label is actually displayed.
- Whether the scheme and certification decision meet the Directive definitions and conditions.
Next action
Move the record forward.
Verify the exact displayed mark against the scheme register and certificate, then limit the wording to the certified subject, scope and validity period.

Why this question appears
The Directive sets conditions for displaying sustainability labels, including certification-scheme or public-authority bases. A certification word alone does not establish that a sustainability label is displayed or qualifies.
