EmpCo claim requirements
Climate-neutral and offset claims
Separate measured emissions and direct reductions from carbon credits, especially when wording suggests a neutral, reduced or positive product impact.
Illustrative wording
A claim that could start this review
“This product is climate neutral through verified offsets.”
This example is written by EmpCo for orientation. It is not a quotation, company evidence or a finding that the rule applies.
Clarify
What must be established
- Is the claim about a product, service, organisation or contribution?
- What lifecycle and emissions boundary was measured?
- Does the asserted product impact rely on greenhouse-gas offsets or credits?
Evidence
What to obtain
- The emissions inventory, lifecycle boundary and calculation method for the stated subject.
- Direct emissions reductions separated from purchased or retired credits.
- Credit programme, quantity, vintage, retirement record and claim-period details.
Communication
What should be clear
- Separate direct reductions from purchased or retired credits.
- State the measured boundary, period and role of any credits.
Unresolved until reviewed
What EmpCo does not assume
- Whether the assertion concerns a product or another subject.
- Whether the asserted impact is based on offsetting in the sense addressed by the Directive.
Next action
Move the record forward.
Separate measured emissions and direct reductions from credit use, identify the exact product-impact wording, and send the complete presentation for responsible review.
Legal source
Why this question appears
The Directive adds a prohibition concerning claims, based on greenhouse-gas offsetting, that a product has a neutral, reduced or positive environmental impact. A reference to offsets does not by itself establish such a claim or reliance.
